The following is a selection of fisheries and water quality tables that contain data from the salmon watersheds (note that some data sets extend beyond these watersheds). Accessing data from this page will show the entire data table. To view only the data for an individual watershed, go to Search by Individual Watershed.

ASC01

Fishway Trap Catches
Atlantic Salmon Commission

Numbers of salmon and other fish species recorded from ASC’s fishway traps. Fish are trapped as they move upstream. Data are from 3 river basins – Penobscot, Narraguagus and Dennys. Records extend from 1987 through the present.

Stream Fish Densities: Atlantic Salmon & Other Species
Atlantic Salmon Commission

Data are from electrofishing surveys conducted by ASC from the 1960s through the present. The number of years in the data record varies among sites. Most of the calculated densites are for salmon; however other species are also included in the data table as presence/absence records. Data from other surveyed sites will be added to PEARL as they are made available by ASC.

ASC04

Atlantic Salmon Redds
Atlantic Salmon Commission

Redd counts are conducted annually in mid-November by canoeing or walking the rivers. The number and location of redds are recorded for each stream. Data are from 8 watersheds and extend from the 1940s (for some watersheds) to the present. For conservation purposes, data are aggregated across multiple stream reaches within each watershed; site coordinates are not provided.

Stream Electrofishing Surveys
ME Dept. of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife

IF&W conducts stream electrofishing surveys across the state. Level of sampling effort and number of years with data vary across sites. Some samples reflect a sampling (and data recording) bias for gamefish species, while other samples include all species collected during each sampling event. The index map shown here indicates only those sites in the eastern part of the state.

Brook Trout Monitoring Program
ME Dept. of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife

IF&W uses standardized sampling protocols to survey a series of baseline stream sites across the state. Some sites have been sampled for > 10 years. Survey data are used to calculate brook trout densities. While earlier data are biased towards gamefish species, more recent data include all species collected during each sampling event. The index map shown here indicates only those sites in the eastern part of the state.

Lake Fish Inventory
ME Dept. of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife

This data set contains a checklist of fish species occurring in each of > 2,000 lakes across the state. Species lists are based on a variable amount of sampling effort conducted over a variable number of years. Lists are updated annually, with new species being added to a lake's checklist whenever they are first recorded from the lake. The index map shown here indicates only those sites in the eastern part of the state.

Fish Stocking (Lakes): pre-1989
ME Dept. of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife

IF&W's lake fish stocking records from the 1930s through 1988. Data include species and number of individuals stocked by lake. The index map shown here indicates only those sites in the eastern part of the state.

Fish Stocking (Lakes & Streams): 1989 - Present
ME Dept. of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife

IF&W's lake and stream stocking records from 1989 to the present. Data include species and number of individuals stocked by waterbody. The index map shown here indicates only those sites in the eastern part of the state.

Synoptic Stream Water Quality Surveys
Mitchell Center, University of Maine

These surveys were designed to create three seasonal snapshots of pH related water chemistry in Maine salmon rivers.  The sampling scheme allowed for comparisons both within and among watersheds under similar flow and precipitation conditions.  Water samples were collected on the same day in spring, summer, and fall from 74 sites across 13 Downeast and central Maine river systems, including all eight drainages with Endangered population of Atlantic salmon. The spring and fall sample days each coincided with peak flow conditions following significant rain events.  The summer sample occurred at normal low flow conditions.

Stream Chemistry: Penobscot & Downeast Composite Data
Mitchell Center, University of Maine

This composite data set contains stream chemistry data compiled from six monitoring projects, conducted by University of Maine and DEP researchers.  The list of measured water quality parameters differs among projects, as does the time period of the records.

River Temperatures: Weekly Averages
Atlantic Salmon Commission

Weekly average water temperatures are calculated from hourly (or finer-scale) records. Data extend from 1991 through the present, although the number of years with data varies among sites. Currently, this data set contains only Narraguagus River data; other rivers will be added as the data are made available by ASC.

Narraguagus River Temperatures: Daily Averages
Atlantic Salmon Commission

Daily average water temperatures are calculated from hourly (or finer-scale) records. Data extend from 1991 through the present, although the number of years with data varies among sites.
